Take note of MobileMe! In July 2008, Apple added features to .Mac and changed its name to MobileMe. We have since replaced Take Control of .Mac with Take Control of MobileMe and have continued updating that title. Buy that version instead.

On April 9, 2009, Apple sent MobileMe members a message stating that HomePage, the Web-based interface used by .Mac for creating Web pages and online photo albums, will be discontinued on July 7, 2009. Existing pages will remain available, at their previous addresses, indefinitely, but after that date HomePage will no longer be available for creating new pages or modifying existing ones. (You can, however, still access the files directly on your iDisk and edit them using another program, if you like.) Apple recommends that all MobileMe users move to iWeb or iPhoto for creating MobileMe-hosted Web pages. In addition, as previously announced, .Mac Groups will cease to function on July 7, 2009.

Apple has posted a KnowledgeBase article about setting up Mail to use a me.com email address. The article tells you to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5.4 and to install the Mac OS X Update for MobileMe. It then details what to expect in Mail with respect to any old .mac email addresses and new .me email addresses.

Apple has announced that as of early July 2008, the new MobileMe service will replace .Mac. Among other things, this means that you'll be able to receive mail at your-.Mac-member-ID@me.com in addition to your existing mac.com address. More significantly, changes you make to email (as well as calendars and contacts) will be immediately "pushed" up to Apple's servers and, from there, back down to your other Macs, iPhone, iPod touch, or even Windows PCs, meaning (I hope) the end to many syncing problems. The webmail interface will get some useful new features, too. Until MobileMe is officially released, I can't say for sure how, if at all, it will affect the use of Mail, but my suspicion based on what I've read is that almost everything will continue working just as it did before. If that turns out to be incorrect, I'll add new information here when the time comes.
